Eric Fischl (b. 1948) is a provocative and prolific American painter and sculptor.
Since the 1980's he has been admired internationally as one of the most daring and distinct figurative painters.
Fischl's work is typically infused with a pending emotional, sexual or psychological violence.
In 2008 he pursued a series of paintings focused on the “Corrida Goyesca de Ronda,” Spain’s oldest (and still active) bullfighting arena.
Since its debut in the 18th century, this event has inspired an impressive lineage of prominent literary and artistic creators including Goya, Picasso, Bataille, Bacon, and Hemmingway.
Compelled by the subject’s historical attention and its association not only with physical struggle, but also with masculine identity and coming of age, Fischl felt a challenge to reinterpret the genre.
“Matador A” captures the enigmatic appeal of the bullfight—its energy, machismo, and violence—with bold red and black coloration.
On the other hand, its smoky atmospheric presence and costumed matador suggests a flamboyant, seductive dance rather than a bloody battle of man versus beast.
